Welcome to Winton Originally called Pelican Waterhole, Winton is the birthplace of our National song, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and our National airline,Qantas. It is the land where Dinosaurs once roamed, and the home of Boulder Opal. Winton Shire is located in Central West area of Queensland and covers 53,820 square km’s with a population of around 1,600 people. Sheep and cattle grazing, opal mining and gypsum mining, and more recently tourism are the main industries for this area. There are numerous natural and man-made attractions. Bladensburg National Park, Lark Quarry Conservation Park with its dinosaur stampede footprints. The mining town of Opalton, home to the best Boulder Opal in the world. The Waltzing Matilda Centre, the only museum in the world dedicated to a song. The heritage listed Corfield & Fitzmaurice Store, Winton Club where Qantas held their first board meeting. The Historic Royal Theatre and the world’s only Musical Fence - to name just a few! Located at the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Elderslie Street, is our Visitor Information Centre and has all the information you will need for your stay in Winton and our surrounding regions. Let the friendly staff introduce you to our wonderful town and our amazingly diverse landscape. Town maps and our self drive brochures (there are six to choose from or combine several for a great day, over night or week trip), they will supply you with a Winton service directory, so you will know where our local businesses including accommodation and eateries are located and the hours of trade all available free of charge. Book a day tour to Lark Quarry, Grab a “What’s On In Winton” brochure and find out what there is to see and do for the month in our amazing town (available from April to September). Check road reports before embarking on your journey. The staff is able to ring ahead for accommodation and tour availabilities for you. The Visitor Information Centre is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm from April to September. October through to March are reduced hours. Restricted hours on public holidays and closed Christmas Day & Boxing Day.
