Cape York Turtle Rescue

Every year hundreds of ghost nets drift onto Cape York’s western beaches, entangling turtles and marine life.

Cape York Turtle Rescue is all about the indigenous people of the region working to save the dwindling turtle population of the Western Cape. And this is your opportunity to help. The Chivaree campsite is located at Janie Creek, 14kms south of the Aboriginal community of Mapoon, about 80kms north of Weipa.

Accommodation is in quality tent - cabins on raised platforms with modern bush camping facilities. Those who enjoy remote wilderness experiences will count their nights under canvas at Janie Creek as one of their special travel experiences.

During the camp you’ll work alongside local Aboriginal Rangers and Wildlife Of?cers as they tag and measure nesting turtles, protect freshly laid eggs with feral pig exclusion devices, remove ghost nets from the beach and collect valuable data for Queensland’s Marine Turtle Conservation Project.
